North West Dialysis Service provides and maintains the dialysis equipment for the regional hospitals. The nursing staff are initially trained in dialysis techniques at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, when there is a need for services to be provided in a rural area.
The size of the rural centres vary from one to 15 patients with the number of machines varying from one to nine.
The majority of centres operate three days a week for either one or two sessions per day depending on patient numbers.
